This is the degeneration of the nerve providing sensitivity to the toes. Due to mechanical stress, it thickens and becomes a real “ball of nerves”. It is regularly located between the 3rd and 4th toe. The pain is paroxysmal and forces the patient to remove their shoes to relieve themselves.
Local corticosteroid infiltration provides temporary pain relief.
The radical treatment is surgical and requires excision of the nerve.
Hospitalization is outpatient, the discomfort when putting on shoes persists for 3 weeks. We will just warn the patient of permanent hyposensitivity in the 3rd and 4th toes. This has no untoward consequences.
